Smart Offline Lets You Watch More Videos And Save On Data Charges

As everyone know that ‘Offline Video’ is one of the main benefits provided by YouTube Red Subscription. But, what about data costs? In the developing countries like India, data cost is a major problem among users. It seems YouTube has felt this problem and thus a new’ Smart Offline’ feature is being rolled out, especially for the Indian YouTube users. The new feature will let the users queue videos so that they will be downloaded overnight. Why overnight? Because during the overnight, data costs are off-peak for many Indian mobile providers. So, how it will work and what are the benefits, let us discuss in this article!



The company wrote on its official blog about this feature. The blog post says-

Today, we’re beginning to roll out a feature called Smart Offline on YouTube that lets you takes advantage of these cheaper data rates as offered by your mobile operator, without requiring you to stay up late at night.

The feature is currently rolling to AirTel and Telenor subscribers and the company has said that they will bring this feature to all users in India in upcoming days! To get this new feature , make sure you have the latest YouTube app. Here are the steps to use the ‘Smart Offline’ feature on the YouTube app-

  • Offline any video you like by tapping on the ‘Offline’ button you will see below the title of the video.
  • Check if your mobile operator has eligible data offer for this feature. If yes, then select the option to use the ‘Smart Offline’ Feature.
  • While you sleep, the videos will automatically offline so you can watch them later when you will wake up!
  • You can find the videos in the ‘Saved Videos’ Tab.
